DXF Inspector

Inspect DXF units, source entity records, block definitions, layers and supported-geometry bounds. Compare declared metadata with a bounded drawing preview, then download TXT, JSON or entity-count CSV reports. Everything runs locally.

File inspection

Inspection reports describe the whole file. Preview layer/display controls do not alter the source or these counts. Declared header extents and units are unverified; preview bounds cover only supported sampled 2D geometry.

Exports include all inspection rows, regardless of filters. Formula-like entity names are protected with an apostrophe in CSV.

Drag to pan; wheel/pinch to zoom. Focus the canvas for arrows, +/− and F/Home. Zoom is relative to the last fitted view. Reference grid spacing adapts to zoom; it is not a dimensional annotation.

    Preview limits and details

Supported: LINE, ordinary 2D polylines (including bulges), CIRCLE, ARC, ELLIPSE, POINT, SOLID, XY wireframe 3DFACE, basic TEXT/MTEXT and bounded block inserts/arrays. Curves use 5° sampling; text uses approximate system fonts and simplified formatting/alignment. Paper layouts, dimensions, hatches, splines, mesh/fitted polylines, non-default extrusion coordinates and external references are not reproduced. Linetypes, widths and CAD font metrics are not exact. Do not use this preview for manufacturing, compliance or precision measurement. Keep the original DXF and verify it in CAD software.

      Entity record counts

Raw ENTITIES and BLOCKS counts exclude BLOCK/ENDBLK and VERTEX/SEQEND records. Parsed top-level counts depend on parser support. Supported visits expand inserts and exclude unsupported/invisible/paper-space entities; they are not original entity totals.

      Layer inspection

Raw counts include primary source records, not expanded block placements. Declared layer state comes from the layer table. Preview memberships can overlap through insert ancestry; they do not sum to a source entity total.

      A FEW SIMPLE STEPS

      How to use DXF Inspector

      1. Choose a text DXF or load the example. The selected-file area reports filename, size and inspection status.
      2. Review declared units and header extents separately from supported preview bounds. Search entity and layer tables, and compare raw source counts with parsed/expanded counts.
      3. Inspect the drawing preview where supported. Download the full inspection as TXT/JSON, or entity counts as CSV. Reports include all rows regardless of table filters.

      Why use this tool?

Your drawing is never uploaded to any server; parsing, metadata inspection, previewing and report generation happen locally in your browser. Clear count definitions and separated bounds help you understand what the preview includes and omits.

Tool inputs stay in your browser. Only your theme preference is saved on this device.

      A few things worth knowing

Why do the entity totals differ?

Raw primary records in ENTITIES are separate from entities inside BLOCKS definitions. Parsed top-level counts depend on parser support. Supported visits can expand block inserts and exclude unsupported, invisible or paper-space entities. They are deliberately reported as different quantities.

Are these the complete drawing extents?

No. Header extents are unverified declarations and can be absent or stale. Supported preview bounds cover sampled 2D geometry, including default-hidden layers; default-visible bounds are separate. Unsupported entities, layouts and approximate text can affect completeness.

Can it inspect a file the viewer cannot draw?

Sometimes. If structural scanning and parsing succeed but no supported scene can be drawn, metadata and raw counts remain available with a preview warning. This is not a complete DXF validator, corruption-repair tool or DWG reader.

Do preview changes alter my file or inspection reports?

No. Layer toggles, zoom, background and preview styles affect only the local view. Inspection reports describe the whole inspected file, and downloads of the source DXF are not rewritten. Filtered tables do not limit report exports.

      What are the limits?

Text DXF up to 10 MiB, 700,000 group pairs and a 12-second worker limit. Metadata inspection allows up to 50,000 primary/parsed top-level entities, 100,000 block-definition entity records, 5,000 layer names and 256 entity types. Preview geometry has separate resource limits. DWG and binary DXF are unsupported.
