A FEW SIMPLE STEPS

How to use Word & Character Counter

  1. Type or paste text into the workspace. Counts update automatically after a short pause.
  2. Review words, characters with and without whitespace, approximate sentences, paragraphs, lines and UTF-8 bytes.
  3. Choose a reading speed to update the estimated reading time. The estimate is based only on word count.
  4. Copy the counts or download a TXT report. Reports omit your original text. Clear the text when finished.

Why use this tool?

Your text is counted on your device without libraries, uploads, an account or browser storage. Live counts help you check length as you edit. Reports contain only totals and counting notes, so your original writing is not included.

Tool inputs stay in your browser. Only your theme preference is saved on this device.

A few things worth knowing

How are words and characters counted?

Modern browsers use Unicode word and grapheme segmentation. Words include word-like segments; punctuation and emoji alone do not count as words. A combined emoji or a letter with combining marks normally counts as one character. Older browsers fall back to Unicode code points for characters and a simpler word rule. Word boundaries can vary by browser and language.

What does without whitespace mean?

Whitespace graphemes such as spaces, tabs and line breaks are excluded from that total. The full character count includes them. Invisible non-whitespace characters may still count, and a Windows CRLF line break normally counts as one grapheme.

How are paragraphs, sentences and lines counted?

Paragraphs are nonempty blocks separated by a blank line. A single line break remains in the same paragraph. Lines count physical line breaks, including a final empty line, but an empty input has zero lines. Visual wrapping does not add lines. Sentence segmentation is approximate, especially with abbreviations or unusual punctuation.

Is reading time accurate?

It is a rough estimate calculated from word count and your selected words per minute, rounded up to the next second. It does not account for reading difficulty, images, comprehension or individual reading habits.

What is the input limit?

The tool accepts up to 200,000 UTF-16 text units to keep processing manageable. Some emoji occupy multiple units. Oversized input stays in the editor, but counts and exports are unavailable until you shorten it. The tool does not truncate your text.

What is included in the report?

The report includes counts, reading time, the selected reading speed and counting-method notes. It does not contain your original text. Text remains in page memory and is cleared when you clear it or reload the page.
