Up to 200,000 UTF-16 text units. Punctuation-only segments and emoji are not counted as words.
Optional total for pauses, slides or breaks. Added to speaking time only, when words are present.
YOUR ESTIMATE

Ready. Paste text and choose the speeds that suit you.

Word boundaries use your browser’s segmentation when available.

Defaults and comparison speeds are illustrative, not measurements. Language, complexity and delivery affect actual time. No original text is included in the exported summary.

A FEW SIMPLE STEPS

How to use Reading Time Estimator

  1. Paste an article, speech or script, or load the example.
  2. Choose whole-number reading and speaking speeds. Optionally add a total number of seconds for speaking pauses.
  3. Select Estimate time to see word count, reading time, speaking time and reading-speed comparisons.
  4. Copy or download the summary. It contains settings and counts, without the original text. Editing fields clears old results.

Why use this tool?

Your text is counted entirely in your browser, without uploads, accounts, dependencies or saved input history. You control the speed assumptions, and exported summaries omit your source text. The estimate remains available alongside your original for review.

Tool inputs stay in your browser. Only your theme preference is saved on this device.

A few things worth knowing

How is time calculated?

Word count is divided by the selected words per minute and multiplied by 60, then rounded up to a whole second. Extra speaking pauses are added to speaking time after rounding. They do not affect reading time. If no word-like segments are found, both times are zero and pauses are not applied.

Are the default speeds measured averages?

No. The 200-word reading and 130-word speaking defaults are illustrative starting assumptions, as are the 150, 200, 250 and 300 words/min comparison rates. Choose rates that fit your own pace. This is not a reading-speed test or a precise prediction; language, difficulty, delivery and pauses affect real duration. Rehearse a speech to refine its timing.

How are words counted?

When available, Intl.Segmenter with the English locale counts word-like segments using your browser’s Unicode data. This can segment many writing systems but is not a language detector. The fallback counts letter and number runs with internal apostrophes and may be less useful for scripts without spaces. Punctuation-only segments and emoji are not words; numbers may be counted. Boundaries can vary across browsers.

What values can I enter?

Reading speed accepts whole numbers from 50 to 1,000 words/min. Speaking accepts 50 to 500 words/min, and total extra speaking pauses accepts 0 to 3,600 seconds. These are input limits, not recommended rates. Input is limited to 200,000 UTF-16 text units without truncation.

What is included in a summary?

The summary includes word count, chosen rates, reading and speaking estimates, applied pauses, comparison speeds and the counting method. It does not include the original text. Reports are available only when at least one word-like segment is counted.

Is my text saved or uploaded?

No. All counting happens locally, and input is not stored in browser storage. Only the site theme preference is stored. Clear text keeps speed and pause settings; Try an example restores the default settings. Editing input or settings clears old estimates and disables exports until recalculation.
